Weekend Box Office: ‘Breaking’ More Records

In the last couple of weeks, new movies have appealed to both male and female audiences, and both have responded in exceptionally high numbers. Only ten days after its domestic release, ‘Skyfall’ is just under $7 million away from having the highest domestic gross of any James Bond movie. Even though it fell to the #2 spot this weekend, the film still grossed $45.1 million, and now has a total worldwide gross of $669.2 million. That’s $70 million more than 2006’s ‘Casino Royale’ made in total. Meanwhile, the latest ‘Twilight’ sequel has also gone on to break its own franchise records.

Females flocked in droves to see ‘Breaking Dawn, Part 2‘, the final installment of the self-proclaimed “saga.” The movie’s domestic debut was higher than ‘Part 1‘, but failed to meet the franchise high set by ‘New Moon‘. The finale pulled in $141.3 million, but ‘New Moon’ still has that beat with $142.8 million. Where ‘Part 2’ did break records was with worldwide numbers. In 61 markets, the movie earned $199.6 million, which gives it a $340.9 million worldwide opening weekend. With numbers like these, we can only speculate as to how long it will be before Summit Entertainment (now part of Lionsgate) decides to reboot or extend the franchise. Thanks to ‘Breaking Dawn’, Lionsgate has crossed the $1 billion mark for ticket sales in a given year for the first time ever.

After expanding to 1,775 screens across the nation, Steven Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln‘ climbed to the #3 spot. The historical drama grossed $21 million and warranted a per-screen average of $11,831 just dollars. With this success, Buena Vista is pushing the release even farther on Wednesday, in hopes that a second expansion will capitalize on the holiday week.

The limited release of David O. Russell’s ‘Silver Linings Playbook‘ is warranting a similar expansion model. The film only opened on 16 screens, but pulled in $458,000, for a $28,625 per-screen average. The Weinstein Company plans to bump its theater count up to 400 on Wednesday and gradually increase it over the next few following weekends.

Also following a smaller version of the same model is Joe Wright’s ‘Anna Karenina‘. After also opening on 16 screens, ‘Anna Karenina’ pulled in $315,000. The $19,688 per-screen average has pushed Focus to expand its release on Wednesday and follow a platform model after that.
