Weekend Box Office: Bundle Up

As North America was engulfed in a cold front that caused temperatures to plummet below freezing across the majority of the lower 48 states, moviegoers opted to see the chilliest of the major theatrical releases. Disney’s ‘Frozen’ climbed into first place in its second wide weekend. Adding another $31.6 million to its haul, the animated musical has now earned $132.4 million domestically.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire‘ dropped into the second position in its third weekend. The sequel added another $27 million to its run, but fell a steep 63% in attendance. Domestically, the second chapter in the ‘Hunger Games‘ four-film saga has taken in $336.6 million, less than $72 million away from matching the whole box office total for the first film. Worldwide, its $673.3 million gross is less than $18 million away from passing its predecessor.

Despite being the only new nationwide release of the weekend and featuring named stars Christian Bale and Woody Harrelson, the bleak revenge drama ‘Out of the Furnace‘ debuted in the #3 spot. The first weekend of December isn’t typically a strong one, and mild marketing didn’t do much to make moviegoers consider the film. On more than 2,100 screens, ‘Furnace’ barely blazed up $5.3 million.

Two Buena Vista films rounded out the Top 5. ‘Thor: The Dark World‘ landed in the fourth spot with $4.7 million, bringing its worldwide total up to $193.6 million. Meanwhile, ‘Delivery Man‘ was bumped up to the #5 spot in its third weekend with $3.7 million, for a lifetime domestic total of $24.7 million.

The debut of the acclaimed new Coen brothers film ‘Inside Llewyn Davis‘ warranted the 18th highest per-screen average of all time. On just four screens, the CBS Films folk drama earned $401,000 – a per-screen average of $100,250. The fantastic drama will expand slowly over the next few weeks prior to its wide release in January.

Opening weekend numbers for ‘Last Days on Mars‘ have yet to be announced.
