Dunkirk

Weekend Box Office: British Occupation

As well as this weekend’s new kids’ movie played on Friday, it couldn’t keep up its momentum on Saturday or Sunday, allowing ‘Dunkirk’ to easily retain the top spot at the box office. Similarly, thanks to a strong second week, the surprise hit ‘Girls Trip’ outgrossed the new action-packed spy movie.

Word of mouth and strong reviews resulted in ‘Dunkirk‘ falling only 44% in its sophomore outing. The $100 million war film added another $28.1 million to its domestic earnings, which are up to $102.8 million after ten days. Overseas, the movie has collected $131.3 million, giving Christopher Nolan’s latest a $234.1 million worldwide total. Considering the experimental nature of the film, I’m pretty surprised and impressed that audiences are showing up for this unique picture.

On Friday, it looked like ‘The Emoji Movie‘ might end the weekend ahead of ‘Dunkirk’, but that’s not how history unfolded. The front-heavy weekend gave ‘The Emoji Movie’ a $25.6 million domestic start. Estimated to debut with $65 million, the terribly reviewed picture will need strong turnout when it starts its international run.

Girls Trip‘ fell just 36% in its second week. The R-rated comedy added $20 million to its domestic total, which is now up to $65.5 million, and finished in third place. Universal launched the slow international expansion this weekend in the UK, where the movie made $2 million. With $67.5 million in the bank, that’s excellent for a $19 million comedy.

Charlize Theron’s badass spy flick didn’t quite open to expectations, but it still had a decent debut. Opening in fourth place, ‘Atomic Blonde‘ grossed $18.5 million in North America. The $30 million picture kicked off overseas (the number of territories has yet to be announced) with $5.9 million, giving it a $24.4 million worldwide start. Considering the aggressive marketing campaign, I imagine that the movie will need to gross more than usual to get out of the red. If it plays like ‘John Wick’, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Four-week-old ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming‘ rounded out the Top 5 with its first light decline in attendance. Falling 39% from last week, it collected $13.4 million and brought its domestic total up to $278.3 million. The international box office is now at $355.4 million, making its worldwide total $633.7 million.

In limited release, Kathryn Bigelow’s ‘Detroit‘ earned $365,455 from 20 locations, resulting in an $18,273 per-screen average. The heavy 140-minute drama expands wide this weekend. It will be interesting to see if it follows the recent trend of strong specialty offerings playing poorly after expansion.

Al Gore’s ‘An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power‘ debuted at four locations with $130,000. A wide expansion isn’t yet locked in, but with a $32,500 per-screen average, it likely won’t be long before the documentary is easily accessible.

I feel like I’ve seen too many movies like Atomic Blonde, and they were all released in the past decade. Salt, Columbiana, Hanna, Haywire, Everly, all the Resident Evils…it is nearly as bad as the old-male-lead action movie flood of Taken, Gunman, The Equalizer…

Umm…okay, how about….movies focused on a continually moving mode of transportation to convey intensity…Speed, Unstoppable, The Chase, Snowpiercer, Premium Rush, Air Force One, Executive Decision…
