Weekend Box Office: No Dinero for De Niro

Between the three poor new movie releases and the East Coast getting pummeled with snow, this was a very weak weekend at the box office.

Despite a 50% week-over-week decline, ‘The Revenant‘ climbed into the top spot this weekend. With ‘Stars Wars’ finally dipping and ‘Ride Along’ tanking in its second week, the Best Picture nominee added $16 million to its domestic total, which now sits at $119.1 million. Overseas, the $135 million survival/revenge drama has grossed $104.4 million, for a worldwide total of $223.6 million.

Although ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ sat in the #3 spot last weekend, it climbed back to #2 thanks to ‘Ride Along 2’ hitting a wall. Dipping 46%, the film earned another $14.2 million. Its domestic total is now at $879.2 million, which means that the $900 million milestone appears attainable. The movie’s international total is up to $1.06 billion, making its worldwide total $1.93 billion. If it can muster another $247 million worldwide, the film will pass ‘Titanic’ to become the second-highest grossing movie of all time. However, it will need another $848 million to dethrone ‘Avatar’. That’s just not going to happen – that is, until Disney re-releases ‘The Force Awakens’ in upconverted 10k 4D in the year 2025.

Ride Along 2‘ may have closed its sophomore week in third place, but dropped a massive 63% in attendance. The original ‘Ride Along‘ only fell 48% at this point, so – on top of the weaker debut last week – its second weekend is quite a blow for the Universal flick. The $40 million sequel made another $12.9 million, bringing its domestic total to $59.1 million. International showings have resulted in $10.4 million, giving ‘Ride Along 2’ a ten-day worldwide total of $69.5 million.

Lionsgate must have known it would have a difficult time seeing any return from the poorly reviewed ‘Dirty Grandpa‘. From more than 2,900 locations, the crude R-rated comedy pulled $11.5 million for a fourth place finish. When looking at per-screen averages, the fifth place opening for the PG-13 horror flick ‘The Boy‘ was stronger. That one grossed $11.2 million from 2,671 locations. That’s a $4,216 per-screen average, compared for $3,958 per screen for ‘Grandpa’.

The big-screen adaptation of the first book in the YA series ‘The 5th Wave‘ washed out with a sixth place debut. After drawing a mere $10.7 million, the $38 million franchise starter isn’t likely to start a franchise at all. Dead in the water, it’s likely to go the route of ‘Beautiful Creatures’ or ‘The Mortal Instruments’.

Surprisingly, but deservedly so, the second-best holdover of the weekend was Michael Bay’s ‘13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi‘ in seventh place. (The best holdover was tenth place ‘The Big Short‘.) After climbing to an additional 528 locations, Bay’s film fell less than 40% week-over-week and claimed another $9.7 million. After ten days, the $50 million war story has made $33.4 million domestically. Its international run hasn’t started yet.

Weekend numbers for Keanu Reeves’ thriller ‘Exposed’ haven’t been announced.

    10k 4d? Let’s go!

Actually, 4D theaters are kinda gimicky, and I don’t think I could sit through anything longer than a 15-20 minute show at Disney or Sea World.
