R.I.P. Bob Hoskins

P-p-p-please, Eddie, say it ain’t so! Beloved character actor Bob Hoskins has died at the age of 71.

Best known as the human foil to a living cartoon character in ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’, the British actor had a long and varied career over the past four decades. A hard-worker with over a hundred credits on his résumé, he played everything from gangsters (‘The Long Good Friday’, ‘The Cotton Club’, ‘Unleashed’) to a daffy pirate (‘Hook’) and a videogame plumber (‘Super Mario Bros.’). He even portrayed real historical figures as different as J. Edgar Hoover (‘Nixon’) and Nikita Khruschchev (‘Enemy at the Gates’). The actor was nominated for an Academy Award in 1987 for his role as a cabdriver drawn into underworld dealings in Neil Jordan’s ‘Mona Lisa’.

Following a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease, Hoskins announced his retirement in 2012. He passed away yesterday after being hospitalized for a bout of pneumonia.
