Say Goodbye to Your Money – The Barnes & Noble Criterion Sale Begins Today

Criterion fans know how expensive it can be to amass a collection of the label’s Blu-ray titles. Smart Criterion fans are wise enough to save their pennies for the twice-annual Barnes & Noble sale, held each July and November, during which the retailer discounts all Criterion discs by 50% off. Oh, how I wish I was that smart this year.

Sadly, although I’ve been holding off purchasing Criterion discs for the past six months, ostensibly for the purpose of waiting for the next sale, I am flat broke right now, owing to expenses from my ongoing home theater renovation and… other things that I don’t need to talk about here.

The last B&N sale ended November 19th, 2012. Since that time, Criterion has released the following titles. This list is not every Blu-ray in the Criterion Collection, just those issued since the last sale. If you plan to buy older releases (or titles only available on DVD), be sure to check Other and tell us in the Comments section.

The Barnes & Noble sale officially starts today, July 9th, and runs to July 29th. All Criterion Collection DVDs and Blu-rays are 50% off MSRP, both in stores and online at barnesandnoble.com. The discounted price should apply to upcoming titles that will be released through the end of the sale period, but not to any preorders scheduled for after the sale ends. (Unfortunately, that rules out ‘The Devil’s Backbone’, which will be released on July 30th.)

This really kills me. There are so many desirable titles on this list. If I had more disposable income at the moment, I’d love to buy ‘3:10 to Yuma’, ‘A Man Escaped’, ‘Babette’s Feast’, ‘Badlands’, ‘Band of Outsiders’, ‘The Blob’, ‘The Ice Storm’, ‘Ivan’s Childhood’, ‘The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp’, ‘Life Is Sweet’, ‘Lord of the Flies’, ‘Medium Cool’, ‘Ministry of Fear’, ‘Monsieur Verdoux’, ‘Naked Lunch’, ‘On the Waterfront’, ‘Purple Noon’, ‘Repo Man’, ‘Safety Last!’, ‘Things to Come’, ‘The Tin Drum’ and ‘Wild Strawberries’, plus some older releases that I passed over in previous sales. Maybe if I can scrape together a few bucks, I might be able to get one or two of them.

Which titles do you plan to buy?

  1. Can’t you ‘get’ some money?

I’m willing to fund the “Help Josh Get All Criterion Blu-rays!” cause. As compensation for years of free (and good) reading entertainment on both The Bonus View and High Def Digest.

Many of those on that list I bought over the past few months using B&N coupons, or catching them on individual sales (like 30% off in store). I picked up a few titles yesterday…

    – Repulsion
    – Diabolique
    – 3:10 to Yuma
    – Safety Last!
    – Mystery Train
    – Maketa Lazarova

I MAY order the Criterion DVD of Schizopolis, which is also 50% off right now.
